When working on a Cummins engine displaying DEF-related fault codes 1673 or 4769 (Aftertreatment DEF Tank Level) along with 3712 or 3714 (Aftertreatment SCR Inducement), follow the steps below to remove the engine derate condition:

  1. Refill the DEF Tank
Ensure the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is filled to the proper level.
  2. Clear Active Fault Codes
    • Connect using TEXA IDC5.
    • Start a diagnostic session.
    • Clear fault codes using either the Faults page or the Activations page.
  3. Key Off Cycle
Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and wait at least 1 minute.
  4. Re-scan and Clear Codes Again
    • Turn the key back ON.
    • Run a new diagnostic scan.
    • Clear any remaining or stored (memorized) fault codes.
  5. Run Engine to Complete Control Cycles
    • Start the engine and allow it to run for approximately 2 minutes.
    • If the engine shuts down after about 1 minute, restart it and continue running.
    • The ECM requires multiple complete control cycles to verify that the DEF level is correct.
  6. Verify Code Status and Final Clear
    • Confirm that the SCR inducement code (3712 or 3714) changes from Active to Inactive/Memorized.
    • Once it is no longer active, clear the code.

Result

After completing these steps, the derate condition should be removed and the engine should return to normal operation.
